Advantages and disadvantages of Kakao Pay transportation card
1. Advantages of Kakao Pay Transportation Card
The advantages of the Kakao Pay transportation card are as follows.
There is no transportation card charging fee
No need to issue T-Money or Cashbee cards
The biggest advantage is that there are no fees. Samsung Pay has a 2% fee for using T-money and Cashbee cards. It means that I have to pay another fee to ride the subway with my own money.
It is also good that you do not have to separately issue a T-money or Cashbee card. I already have a lot of cards, but getting another one issued is tiring. With Kakao Pay, you do not need to separately register a transportation card. It is convenient because you only need to set up an account for transportation expenses.
2. Disadvantages of Kakao Pay Transportation Card
Disadvantages of the Kakao Pay transportation card are as follows.
Not available on iPhone (due to NFC function)
You can use it until the lock screen is turned on
Transportation cards cannot currently be used on the iPhone. With the introduction of Apple Pay, NFC payments are possible. However, it cannot be used on public transportation. Because Apple is still blocking this feature. However, as Apple Pay is now available, it seems that the day will come when it can be used in public transportation soon. (Of course, since you can use Apple Pay, you won’t have to use a Kakao Pay transportation card, right?)
The downside is that you have to turn on the lock screen. In the case of a Samsung Pay transportation card, the transportation card is tagged even when the screen is turned off. On the other hand, the Kakao Pay transportation card works only when you press the power button once to turn on the lock screen. It’s not a huge inconvenience. There were occasional inconveniences, such as when there were a lot of people, when I was busy, when I was holding luggage in one hand and I had to operate my cell phone with only one hand, but the power button was far away and my fingers couldn’t reach it.

3. Issuing a transportation card
The procedure for issuing a mobile transportation card is as follows.
Click the Mobile Transportation Card Issuance button
Agree to Terms of Service
Set up a linked account
Set a payment date
Prepaid/Postpaid Choice
We recommend a postpaid transportation card as a payment method. Deferred payment is a method of automatically charging and paying according to your usage history. You don’t have to worry about payment.
On the other hand, if you choose to pay in advance, you must recharge separately before the payment date approaches. In order not to be overdue, you need to figure out how much you have used and then charge more than that amount in advance. It’s a very cumbersome task.
4. Applying for Income Deduction
The amount spent on public transportation can be deducted from income at the end of the year. However, it can be applied only when an application for income deduction is made, and it is applied only to the usage history after the application is made. Since retroactive application is not possible, it is recommended to apply for income deduction immediately after issuance of the transportation card. The application method is as follows.
Click the ‘three dots’ menu on the mobile transportation card main screen
Register after clicking the Income Deduction Registration button

5. NFC Settings
To use the KakaoPay transportation card, the NFC function must be enabled. If the Kakao Pay transportation card error occurs, refer to the NFC activation method below.
Pull down the menu bar at the top of the screen > Activate NFC
How to turn on NFC from the top bar
There are two types of Kakao Pay transportation card NFC card mode. These are ‘Basic Mode’ and ‘Card Mode’. No matter which one you choose, you can use the transportation card, so don’t worry.
The difference between the two modes is that ‘Basic Mode’ consumes more battery than ‘Card Mode’ because it has more diverse functions. Wouldn’t it be better to use card mode normally?
6. Delete other transportation cards
If you have other transportation card apps installed, you must delete them. This is because there is a risk of duplicate payment if there are two transportation card apps.
In my case, NH Cock Bank was installed. The message kept popping up saying that I couldn’t use the Kakao Pay transportation card unless I deleted this app, so I eventually deleted it. I’ll have to reinstall it later when I need it.
7. Recharge your advance payment
When you use it for the first time, you must charge 10,000 won in advance. Even if you choose the ‘postpay’ method of payment, you must top up the initial prepayment.
8. Using a transportation card
Now it is time to actually use the KakaoPay transportation card. It’s very easy to use.
Press the power button once to turn on the lock screen
Put your phone on the terminal
The Kakao Pay transportation card works only when the mobile phone screen is turned on. It works even if you press the power button to open the lock screen only. You don’t have to unlock the lock screen. KakaoPay transportation card not recognized problem is mostly caused by using the card without turning on the screen.
