How to calculate driver’s license penalty points

Driver’s license penalty points are managed by accumulating all penalty points for the past three years based on the date of the violation or accident. If you have 40 or more demerit points, your license will be suspended for 1 day per point. If you have 40 demerit points, your license will be suspended for 40 days.

◆ Accumulated score: Score obtained by subtracting the score awarded for no accidents from the accumulated/summed score of penalty points imposed for violation of laws, accidents, etc.
The standards for license cancellation due to exceeding the accumulated points are 1 year (121 points)/2 years (201 points)/3 years (271 points).

How to appeal penalty points
If your driver’s license is revoked or suspended due to drunk driving, or if your driver’s license is revoked for exceeding the number of penalty points (accumulated points), you must file an objection with the local police office within 60 days from the date of receiving the decision notice to receive relief.

◆ Appeal (reception) within 60 days → Fact investigation such as on-site inspection → Deliberation committee decision → Notification of result
If your driver’s license is revoked due to failure to renew regular proficiency tests, you must file an objection within 60 days from the date of receiving notice of administrative disposition. You can file a complaint in person at the local police office’s civil affairs office at your address or by mail.

The standards for reduction are driver’s license cancellation (suspension of driver’s license for 110 days, 110 penalty points imposed), driver’s license suspension (suspension period reduced by 1/2, 100 penalty points imposed), and aptitude test cancellation (license relief, cancellation). 110 penalty points will be imposed retroactively. The processing period usually takes 30 to 60 days.
