Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) is a market-type public enterprise established in August 1983. It is implementing various policies aimed at resolving energy supply and demand problems that arose after the second oil crisis and improving the stability and welfare of people’s lives. To this end, we are responsible for a variety of tasks, including the production, supply, refining, and sales of natural gas, the construction and operation of a nationwide gas supply network, and the development of liquefied petroleum gas.
On September 30, 2014, the head office was moved to Daegu Metropolitan City, and work began on October 1, 2014 in Daegu Shinseo Innovation City.
Main businesses include manufacturing and supply of city gas, refining and sales of by-products, construction and operation of natural gas receiving base and supply chain, development, transportation, import and export of natural gas, and development and import and export of liquefied petroleum gas. In addition, we are participating in new/renewable energy using natural gas and its by-products, clean synthetic fuel, and climate-friendly projects.
In addition to projects entrusted by the national or local government, we are actively engaged in various fields, including city gas-related research, technology development, ancillary projects, oil resource exploration/development, related projects, and overseas projects.
As an important player in the domestic energy industry, Korea Gas Corporation continues to make efforts and develop in consideration of energy diversification and the stability of people’s lives.
The history of Korea Gas Corporation is as follows.
In June 1979, Korea Electric Power Corporation conducted a feasibility study in cooperation with Daewoo Engineering to investigate the feasibility of using liquefied natural gas (LNG). This was the first step toward taking on new challenges in the energy field.
In October 1980, the Economic Ministers’ Council resolved the basic policy on the introduction of LNG, and in April 1981, the same council approved the basic plan for the LNG business. The Ministry of Power and Resources finalized the basic plan for the LNG business in June 1981, and accordingly, Korea Electric Power Corporation launched the LNG business headquarters in June of the same year.
The Korea Gas Corporation Act was promulgated in December 1982, and the enforcement ordinance of the law was promulgated in May 1983. In August 1983, Korea Gas Corporation’s articles of incorporation were approved and its establishment was announced.
In October 1986, we introduced liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time in Korea, and in November of the same year, we began supplying natural gas for power generation. In February 1987, the supply of city gas to the metropolitan area began, bringing new changes to the domestic energy supply system.
In December 1999, Korea Gas Corporation was listed on the stock exchange. In April 2007, we were designated as a ‘market-type public enterprise’ in accordance with the Act on the Management of Public Institutions, pursuing more efficient and economical operations.
In this way, Korea Gas Corporation has been improving the nation’s energy stability and the convenience of people’s lives through continuous development and innovation in the energy field.
