Tickets for KTX and SRT are often sold out. In particular, it is almost impossible to book an SRT ticket for the down-bound line on Monday or the upper-bound line on Friday. In this post, we will tell you how to make a reservation when KTX SRT is sold out, or how to book a standing seat, which Korail or SR do not inform you of.
In particular, the last method can be used unconditionally when it is sold out and reservations are impossible, regardless of KTX or SRT, so please watch it until the end.
Reservation waiting screen (KTX)
One of the methods that can be used when KTX and SRT are sold out on the desired time and date is the reservation waiting system. This is a system that has been created since March 10, 2020, and it is a system that allows you to receive reservations in excess of 10% of the total number of seats. In other words, if the total number of seats in SRT is 100, you can reserve up to 110 seats. However, more than 10 people exceeding 100 seats will be in a reservation waiting state, and if there is a cancellation ticket, it is a system that gives priority to these 10 people.
Please note that notifications are provided at 9:00 am the next day according to the order of waiting for reservations, and payment must be made by midnight (24:00) on the same day. If you do not pay after this midnight, we will move on to the next order.
Another thing to note is that we do not accept applications from 2 days before departure.
One of the ways to make reservations when KTX and SRT are sold out is to purchase standing/unreserved seats.
From February 27, 2018, KTX tickets can be booked through the Korail Talk application. Also, during special transportation periods such as holidays, standing seats are sometimes sold. However, since the number of officially released standing seats is small, if there are only standing seats in the reservation window, you must pay quickly to receive a confirmation ticket. Standing tickets that can be reserved through Korail Talk are 15% cheaper than regular seats.
In KTX, there is also a system called non-reserved seats. Please note that these seats can only be purchased during commuting hours on weekdays, and cannot be used on weekends and public holidays. Unlike standing seats, non-reserved seat tickets give you the right to sit and occupy a seat if there is an empty seat. However, there is a downside that you have to yield to the person who reserved the seat. Non-reserved seat tickets are 5% cheaper than regular seats.
Standing + Seating Ticket
Alternatively, you can purchase a standing seat + seat connection ticket through KTX Korail Talk. Standing seat + seat connection ticket is a ticket that must be used as a seat in the section where there is a seat, and as a standing seat in the other section.
Seats available for standing
Non-reserved seats may be seated, but standing seats cannot be seated in principle. However, there are seats available for standing people as well.
SRT did not allow standing in principle. However, as a result of numerous complaints, from March 17, 2022, up to 15 standing seats per train will be sold. However, standing seats are not sold on SRT 690 trains. SRT standing seat tickets cannot be purchased online, and can only be purchased offline (stations, kiosks). Exceptionally, SRT sells standing tickets only on holidays such as Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok.
There may be cases where the above two methods cannot be used. In particular, when SRT is sold out in principle, there is no official way other than waiting for a reservation. However, it is not possible to miss a ticket or wait anxiously for a reservation.
Here, there is a way to bypass the SRT by standing and reserve it. However, there are two prerequisites.
Let’s take an example a little easier with the picture below. Let’s assume that we need to book a ticket from Suseo to Osong, but we can’t even wait for a reservation. By the way, let’s assume that Pyeongtaek Jije Station is the closest point to the destination where I can book.
In this case, first make a reservation for Pyeongtaekjije. And before arriving at Pyeongtaek Jije Station, request a section extension to the cabin manager or station attendant walking around the train. The important point here is that you must first request a section extension. If, after passing through Pyeongtaek Jije Station, a station attendant first asks for a ticket, a 50% surcharge will be imposed due to fraudulent boarding.
If you use this method, you can purchase tickets at a 15% discount because the remaining section is issued as a standing seat. However, if there are seats left due to a cancellation in the meantime, it will be purchased as a regular ticket without a 15% discount.
