Low-emission vehicles are vehicles that emit less air pollutants, such as electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, and hybrid vehicles.

However, if you purchase a used vehicle, you do not know whether it is a Type 1, 2, or 3 vehicle.

If you do not have documents or stickers to prove it, you must search for a low-emission vehicle online yourself. When you search, you must know the vehicle’s engine displacement, model, registration date, etc.

 

Low-emission vehicle registration standards
The acceptance criteria for registering as a low-emission vehicle are calculated comprehensively by measuring carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter, and applying the standard for each substance. Vehicles with emissions lower than the standard are classified into three levels.

In Korea, there is a list of low-emission vehicles established by presidential decree, and you can refer to this to select a vehicle.

There are two ways to check for low-emission vehicles.

Use the integrated zero-emission vehicle website
You can easily check whether your vehicle is a low-emission vehicle by looking up the vehicle registration number or vehicle identification number on the ‘Comprehensive Zero-Emission Vehicle Website’ site.

Check for low-emission vehicles

You can check this immediately by opening the hood (bonnet) of the vehicle.

There is a sticker attached to the bottom of the vehicle hood or above the engine cover. You can immediately check the type of low-emission vehicle using the certification number. Please refer to the picture below.

How to check for low-emission vehicles

Issue stickers
Low-emission vehicle stickers can be issued by visiting the vehicle registration office or received at the district office.

For new cars, dealers often check the location of low-emission car stickers and even attach them.

Order of issuing low-emission vehicle stickers
Bring your ID and vehicle registration card and visit the nearest vehicle registration office.
Register at the counter in charge of new registration work.
Once you complete the registration process, you will be given a registration number.
Issuance of low-pollution stickers (free of charge)
Stickers are attached to the front/rear windshield of the vehicle.
