This is a guide to reducing Paint photo size. Photo and image files such as jpg, png, bmp, and gif can be edited with the Windows Paint program. Using Paint’s resizing feature, you can reduce or increase the size of a photo or image file.

Paint is the default image editing program in Windows. It can be used without a separate installation process. I will explain the process of reducing Paint photo size using jpg files, the most commonly used image format.

Depending on the version of Windows, different versions of the Paint program are installed.
Windows 11 uses a dedicated Paint app.
The version of the Paint program in Windows 10 is 10.0.xx, and the version of the Paint program in Windows 7 is 6.1.7600. Older versions of the Paint program can be downloaded through the link attached to this post.
Enter Paint in the Windows taskbar search and click the searched Paint app.

When the Windows Paint program is run, go to File > Open to load a jpg photo or image file.
Alternatively, load a jpg file by dragging and dropping the file or pressing Ctrl + O.
Paint photo size reduction settings
Click Resize in the top toolbar of Paint.
When the resize and skew settings window opens, set the jpg photo file size reduction settings and click the OK button.
Criteria: pixel selection
Horizontal and Vertical: Enter desired image size
Option: Maintain Aspect Ratio
Reduce jpg photo file size while maintaining aspect ratio
If you use the Maintain aspect ratio option, you only need to enter either width or height. The jpg photo file size will be reduced according to the entered value while maintaining the original ratio.
Save the resized image or edit the jpg image using the editing function in the toolbar.

If you resize a jpg image file with a photo size of 6000 x 4000 and a file size of 3.6MB to 720 pixels wide, it will be reduced to 226KB.
If you want to reduce the file size further than this, you must use another method. Reducing the jpg photo file size described above has its limitations. You can further reduce photo size by converting the image format to webp jpg.
As explained above, when reducing the photo size in Paint, if you reduce the jpg photo file size while maintaining the aspect ratio, you can reduce the photo size to the same ratio as the original photo.
